While primarily its residences have been targeted at mid income families, Wheelock Properties has unveiled Capri, its latest development that offering the Hong Kong developer’s trademark high quality construction. Due to spatial restrictions we have developed a rotating entertainment cabinet anchored centrally in this open plan space which can be controlled by a smartphone. Wrapped round the cabinet is a lounge, dining area, study, balcony. The peninsula previously was the terminus for rail travelers from far flung destinations in Europe, and it continues to host scores of visitors by sea, air and land. Alongside long established luxury accommodations such as The Peninsula, InterContinental Hong Kong and Sheraton Hong Kong, a boutique hotel has arrived on the scene to give guests an alternative, more design-driven stay. And it is redefining luxury to suit intrepid millennial explorers. Designed by Hong Kong based FAK3, Pravo Boutique Hotel is a 93-key property situated in a converted 10 storey former commercial building dating to the 1970s. FAK3 was responsible for its façade design; finished with brass coloured paint, the façade was transformed with dark window frames and tinted glass. FAK3 was commissioned to transform an old house and landscaped gardens, positioned discreetly on a hillside with commanding panoramic views to the South China sea. The focus was to develop the 10,000 sqft residence through specific architectural interventions, redesigning the exterior façade and interior architecture into a holistic synergy. The four storey house has a southern orientation, with long, narrow floor plates with openings to each level offset and staggered into the hillside. ‘The idea of the house was to create a ribbon-like structure that dances through the 4 levels in a sequence of twirls. The program was to develop an iconic retail and commercial boutique environment, restoring an existing 5 storey Tong Lau building in the center of Hong Kong’s financial district. Located next to one of Hong Kong’s iconic landmarks and the longest outdoor escalator in the world. The site is positioned at an interesting intersection of movements, flows and overlapping paths allowing an opportunity to create a visual interplay with the building façade. Beveled frames around the window openings provide a more articulated junction to the fins as well as housing LED lighting, which highlights the window configuration pattern during the night. Window openings were carefully considered in reaction to the context. By providing larger openings on the lower floors, it gives more visual views into the interiors spaces at street level and the elevated escalator. FAK3 created an innovative facade or smart skin exploring the idea of ‘transformative surfaces’, which changes its visual appearance through optical structures. Designed to be a tribute to Hong Kong’s urban panache, a cantilevered billboard reminiscent of the neighborhood’s signage anchors the building within its context. The façade is clad with patterned chocolate-coloured tile and window openings were maximised to flood the interiors with natural lighting. In the common areas, a stainless steel balustrade plated in gold juxtaposes against the raw concrete staircase. The 400 square foot studio features an open plan with the kitchen, living area and bedroom flowing into one another. A sink, refrigerator and flip up counter are all cleverly concealed while a marble rock island with dual cookers and induction hub above doubles as a dining counter. Behind the bed is the Light Fantastic—coloured neon room enhancers that mimic the moods of blue lagoon, green with envy, purple haze and pink candy.
